14th Annual Okanagan Sport Leadership Conference

PacificSport Okanagan is thrilled to announce Dr. Stephen Norris as guest speaker for the 2016 Okanagan Sport Leadership Conference on October 15, 2016. Dr. Norris will address key issues in Sport and lead an expert panel in discussion of the current and future state of the Okanagan Sport System.

The Okanagan Sport Leadership Conference is a one-day Sport Conference designed for Okanagan coaches, sport administrators and practitioners to provide sport education opportunities and hands-on training experiences. The conference will feature a Sport Tradeshow that will include local organizations and businesses and will bring together a team of sport experts to offer interactive seminars on a variety of topics including:

  • Mental Recovery & Regeneration
  • Strength & Conditioning
  • Sport Nutrition
  • Athletic Training Progressions
  • Athlete Preparation & Motivation
  • Maximizing Training & Recovery... and More!

One new addition to the Conference year is the Podium Search/Athlete Identification Camp. This event will be delivered concurrently to the Conference and will be an Athlete Testing event as part of the RBC Training Ground program.  The event will serve as a Regional Qualifier for the Provincial event set for March 4th, 2017 at the Richmond Oval.  The event is FREE for athletes and will include an afternoon of FREE sport education workshops (strength session, nutrition session & athlete panel). Dr. Stephen Norris Bio:

Dr. Norris is a Consultant, Performance and Development with Hockey Canada, after previously serving as the Executive Vice-President and Chief Sport Officer at the WinSport Canada in Calgary. He played a key role as consultant to the ‘Own The Podium’ program high performance/technical group in the five years prior to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. A director of sport physiology and strategic planning at the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary from 1995-2010, Norris has worked with national team officials, coaches and athletes implementing long-term strategic performance plans aimed at achieving excellence. And he was one of the five founding members and contributors to the ‘Canadian Sport For Life’ movement concerning athlete/participant development and the concept of ‘physical literacy’ within Canada.

PODIUM SEARCH™ is a FREE one-day athlete identification camp designed to test athletes’ capacity for sport performance at its highest level. Each athlete goes through a set of basic physiological tests plus one or two sport-specific tests conducted by world-class sport performance experts in order to find out how they measure up to National Team standards. Participant Eligibility for a PODIUM SEARCH Event

Able-bodied Participants

To participate in a PODIUM SEARCH™ event, athletes must be:

  • Athletes ages 14-22
  • Competing in or have competed in ANY sport at a minimum of club, regional, and/or College / University / CIS level
  • Fit, powerful and strong
  • Mentally tough, competitive and highly motivated
  • Ready to accept the challenge of becoming part of British Columbia’s and Canada’s sporting elite

Participants with a Disability

To be able to participate in a PODIUM SEARCH™ event, participants with a disability must be

  • Ages 14-35
  • Have a physical or visual impairment
  • With or without previous sport experience
  • Interested in discovering which Paralympic sports you are eligible for
  • Learn in which Paralympic sports you have the greatest potential

13th Annual Okanagan Sport Leadership Conference A Huge Success

Coaches, athletes, sport administrators and practitioners, and trainers from the community filled the Parkinson Activity Centre on Saturday, October 17th for an action packed day of sport education. Dr. Dean Kriellaars kicked off the day with the keynote address on the topic of physical literacy.
